Despite much effort to discover the answer, we have yet to learn the original source of the contaminated fruit. Could any news story be crying out "eat local" more than this one?

Source of Tainted Tomatoes Still Unknown

When you buy your food from local sources, you know who grew it. You know where they grew it and you can ask how they grew it. If you have concerns about a practice, you can talk it over with the people who have control over the ways your food is produced.

When you buy your food from a massive industrial food chain, you can become sickened (just the way people all across the nation have) and have no way of knowing who made you sick or how. And you certainly aren't going to get anyone to speak with you about your concerns.

Go out and meet the people growing and producing food in your community. See what they have to offer. This is the prime time of year to develop such relationships. Community Supported Agriculture (CSAs), farmers markets and local farms and ranches are in operation everywhere. Look for options in your area on the Local Harvest website.

Technorati Tags: policy, ecology, environment, medication, health

Content by Diana E. These recipes are fun and full of flavor, but won’t keep you tied up in the kitchen.

Greek Salad
from Epicurious.com

I can enjoy a greek salad anytime, but something about the garden fresh tomatoes and cucumbers this time of year calls out for this kind of recipe. The fresh flat leaf parsley flourishing in my garden made it imperative that I add this to my summer meal planning routine.

3/4 pound tomatoes, seeded, diced (about 2 cups)
2 cups diced seeded peeled cucumber (from about 1 large)
1 cup diced red bell pepper (from about 1 large)
1/4 cup pitted kalamata olives or other brine-cured black olives, halved
1/4 cup diced red onion
3 tablespoons chopped fresh Italian parsley
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 1/2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese (about 2 ounces)

Toss first 9 ingredients in medium bowl to blend. Gently mix in cheese. Season with salt and pepper. (Can be made 2 hours ahead. Let stand at room temperature.)

Serve with Mediterranean Grilled Chicken.

Southwestern Turkey Club
from Everyday Food

Sandwiches are a great option in the summer when you want to avoid heating up your kitchen and grab something light when you’re on the go.

8 slices bacon (8 ounces), fully cooked
4 turkey cutlets (4 ounces each)
coarse salt and ground pepper
1 ripe avocado, pitted and peeled
2 Tbsp. fresh lime juice
1 to 2 Tbsp. chopped pickled jalapeno chiles
12 slices whole-wheat sandwich bread, lightly toasted
1 tomato, thinly sliced
:
Season turkey generously with salt and pepper. Cook on outdoor grill over medium heat until cooked through, approximately 10 minutes, turning once.

In a small bowl, mash avocado, lime juice, and chiles with a fork; season with salt and pepper.

Spread avocado mixture on one side of each slice of toast. Layer turkey, bacon, tomato, and toast to form four triple-decker sandwiches. To serve, skewer with toothpicks; slice in half with a serrated knife.

Serve with blue corn tortilla chips and fresh salsa.

Caesar-Chicken Pasta Salad
from Cooking Light

Pasta salad is a summer staple, but this twist on the classic, which incorporates the flavors of a Caesar salad, is a less predictable choice.

3 cups (about 12 ounces) skinned, shredded roasted chicken breast
3 cups hot cooked penne (about 6 ounces uncooked tubular-shaped pasta)
2 cups thinly sliced romaine lettuce
1 1/2 cups halved cherry tomatoes
1/2 cup thinly sliced fresh basil
1/2 cup chopped green onions
1/3 cup fat-free Caesar dressing
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
1 (4-ounce) package crumbled feta cheese
1 garlic clove, minced

Combine all ingredents in a large bowl; toss well to coat.

Serve with crudite and fresh, seasonal fruit.

Grilled Vegetables with Basil Aioli
from iVlllage

This recipe is sure to become a modern classic for the vegetarians in your crowd. And it combines fresh produce with the grill, making it perfect for summer living.

Basil Aioli
1 garlic clove
1/4 cup torn basil leaves
1 egg yolk
1/2 cup olive oil
2 teaspoons lemon juice

2 large red peppers, quartered, core and seeds removed
1 eggplant, cut into 1/4-inch-thick rounds
1 orange sweet potato, peeled and cut diagonally into 1/4-inch-thick rounds
3 zucchini, sliced lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick slices
2 red onions, cut into 1/2-inch-thick rounds
1/3 cup olive oil
1 loaf Turkish bread, split and cut into 4 equal pieces (I used flat pita bread instead.)

To make the basil aioli, put the garlic, basil and egg yolk in a food processor and blend until smooth. With the motor running, gradually add the oil in a thin stream until the mixture thickens. Stir in the lemon juice and season to taste. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Preheat a barbecue grill to medium. Put the pepper, skin side down, around the cool edge of the grill and cook it for 8-10 minutes or until the skin has softened and is blistering.

Meanwhile, brush the eggplant, sweet potato, zucchini and onion slices on both sides with olive oil and season them lightly. Cook the vegetables in batches on the middle of the grill for 5-8 minutes or until they are cooked through but still firm. As the vegetable pieces cook, put them on a tray in a single layer to prevent them from steaming, then grill the Turkish (or pita) bread on both sides until it is lightly marked and toasted.

Spread both cut sides of the bread with 1 tablespoon of basil aioli and pile some of the grilled vegetables on top. Top with the remaining toast and serve immediately.

Broiled Garlic Turkey Burgers

Turkey burgers can be bland and boring. But this version adds a few punches of flavor and gives you a delicious, healthy alternative to ground beef burgers.

1 lb. lean ground turkey
1/2 cup refrigerated shredded hashbrown potatoes (or frozen, thawed hash browns)
2 Tbsp. freshly grated Parmesan cheese
2 tsp. minced garlic
1/4 tsp. seasoned salt
1/8 tsp. freshly ground black pepper

In a medium bowl, combine all ingredients; mix well. Shape into 4 evenly-sized patties.

Cook on outdoor grill over medium heat for 8 to 10 minutes or until no longer pink in center and thoroughly cooked, turning once.

Serve with seasoned, grilled New Potatoes and cole slaw.

Technorati Tags: policy, ecology, environment, medication, health

Content by Diana E. I've seen some of these programs, such as Wasted and Living with Ed, and I enjoyed them and learned from them.

I'm especially excited to see Greensburg, a program about the rebuilding of the small Kansas town that was destroyed by a horrible tornado on May 4 last year. The town has made it a goal to rebuild according to LEED Platinum standards. I admire their desire to make a positive thing out of such a sad event. Another cool fact: the show's executive producer is Leonardo DiCaprio.

This channel will be an excellent way to provide people all across the country with accessible information on greening their lives. It would provide billions of dollars in subsidies for energy conservation and environmentally clean technologies, creating millions of jobs, proponents say.
The sale of the permits would raise more than $5 trillion for the government in the coming decades, money that the bill proposes to distribute to affected industries, consumers and local governments in one of the biggest programs of redistribution of American wealth in history. The bill’s proponents say the money would help pay for a technological leap that would create millions of new jobs while cleaning the atmosphere.

Debate of the bill could last the rest of the week. Most experts would be surprised to see any action taken on the bill at this time, however. Proponents of this type of change and opponents of this bill alike have expressed concerns about whether this is the right time to enact such far reaching legislation.

Technorati Tags: policy, ecology, environment, medication, health

Content by Diana E. The production of those millions of catalogs has an impact on global warming equal to the pollution generated by the annual emissions of two million cars. This is not to mention the many other kinds of mass mailings we all receive each day, from sale flyers to credit card offers. In fact, bulk mail is responsible for creating more than 5 million tons of waste every year.

Clearly, junk mail is not something we can afford to ignore. Obviously you’ll want to reuse and recycle all those flyers, newsletters, envelopes, menus, postcards, brochures and insurance offers. But the real goal is to receive less in the first place. Here are 10 easy ways to do it.

1. Stop the Catalogs:

There are a couple of successful strategies for reducing the number of unwanted mail order catalogs you receive.

Each time you receive a catalog, call the company's 800 number and request they remove you from their mailing list before you put it aside for recycling.

Alternately, join Catalog Choice. This free service allows you to choose the companies you no longer want to receive catalogs from and communicates your desires to those companies on your behalf. Any time you receive a new catalog you’d rather not get you can log back on and update your preferences to reflect the change.

2. Register with the Direct Marketing Association:

To get off many national direct mailling lists you will want to register with the Direct Marketing Association (DMA). You can sign up for free online (DMA Online) or pay $1 to sign up by mail.

The DMA provides this "do not mail" list to its members, who are required to update their mailing lists quarterly, and to others who choose to buy the association’s lists.

3. Eliminate credit offers:

Stop “firm offers” of credit through the Opt-Out Prescreen service. This service allows you to opt out by phone (888-567-8688) or online (Opt-Out Prescreen Website) with the main culprits: the three major credit bureaus and a service called Innovis, which provides credit information to the real estate industry.

4. State your preferences:

Tell the companies you buy goods and services from not to share your information. They are legally required under a 2000 federal law to respect your wishes, but generally only volunteer this information in very fine print. The burden is on you to communicate this desire in writing. By taking this simple step you can prevent companies you support from sharing or selling your information to other companies.

Just about any company will sell or share your information, so you will want to write each and every company you do business with. Looking over your list of monthly bills will give you a good start on a list of companies to contact. The Center for a New American Dream makes it easy for you to write credit card companies and banks by providing form letters addressed to each company at this link: New American Dream Junk Mail Form Letter. This other form letter is a great guide for making your message clear when you write other companies: EcoFuture Junk Mail Form Letter.

Don’t forget to tell charities you support that you prefer they not sell or share your information. If you’ve ever donated to a charity or nonprofit, you may have noticed a subsequent influx of junk mail from similar organizations. This is because the charity that received your donation shared or sold your contact information.

5. Support anti-junk mail legislation:

Anti-junk mail advocates are pushing for legislation on the federal and state level to make it easier to opt out of receiving junk mail.

Lawmakers in 14 states introduced legislation limiting junk mail in 2007. It ordinarily takes a few years of repeatedly introducing such bills to garner sufficient support for them to pass. Therefore, it is important that you write your state legislative representatives to voice your support for these proposals. If you live in a state where no legislation has been introduced, write your state legislators and encourage them to introduce a bill to combat junk mail in your state.

Contact your state legislators about this issue through the Center for a New American Dream's website. You simply fill in your name and address and they send your representatives information about this problem and how to fix it. Visit this link to participate: State Junk Mail Campaign.

New American Dream also encourages you to contact Congress to support efforts to make it easier to opt out. Visit this link to send your Congress people a message: Congress Junk Mail Campaign.

6. Avoid giving out your information:

Think twice about throwing your address out there on a contest entry form. free product giveaway or online user account registration. Every time you provide your real address, you're risking having it sold to companies that will inundate you with junk mail.

7. Reconsider filling out product registration cards:

Contrary to popular belief, you are usually not voiding your warranty on a product by choosing not to return the enclosed registration card. Just keep in mind that companies use these lists to contact consumers about product recalls, which may be of special interest if you have children. This fact may make it worth it for you to risk having your information sold and shared, but only you can make that decision.

8. Think twice about filling out the USPS change of address form:

Filling out the United States Postal Service change of address form helps unwanted junk mail and catalogs follow you to your new address. Instead, individually contact each company and person who needs to know your new address.

9. Remove your name from sweepstakes lists:

Sweepstakes offers likely aren't responsible for much of your junk mail, but it's easy to eliminate this category of junk mail completely by directly contacting the companies who target you and requesting to be removed from their list.

10. Hire a service:

If you would prefer to pay someone else to do the legwork for you, consider one of these services: Green Dimes (www.greendimes.com), 41 Pounds (41pounds.org), Private Citizen (private-citizen.com) or Stop the Junk Mail Kit (www.stopjunk.com).

Sources:
Junk Mail Waste Prevention
Catalog Choice
Privacy Rights Clearinghouse: Junk Mail
State Junk Mail Legislation

Technorati Tags: policy, junk mail, waste, policy, ecology, environment

Content by Diana E. But the reality is that we live in a consumption driven society and that there are things we want and need to buy to go about living our best lives.

Knowing that you do everything you can to reduce your ecological footprint, you obviously want the companies whose products and services to buy to do the same. But it has always been difficult to sort through the green washing and determine which companies have practices in line with yours. No longer. Climate Counts has filled the vacuum by offering information on the practices of hundreds of popular companies.

Climate Counts, a project funded by Stonyfield Farm, offers a fountain of information about many different companies on its website, a downloadable version of the entire report and a pocket-sized scorecard to carry with you for reference as you make spending decisions every single day.

The organization assesses 22 factors in determining each company's ranking on a 100 point scale. You can download a list of these factors and accompanying explanations at this link: Scorecard.

Technorati Tags: policy, ecology, environment, medication, health

Content by Diana E. There are many other options and lots of good recipes for homemade cleaning products available online, which I will share below.

baking soda

mix with vinegar & liquid detergent to make a surface scrub

deodorizing carpets

eliminating & preventing odors in refrigerators & freezers

brightening whites in the laundry

treating pet odors & accidents

freshening the litter box

white vinegar

dishwasher rinse agent

after-shower spray to prevent build up

streak-free windows & mirrors

eliminating static in the laundry

cutting grease in the kitchen & laundry room

Dr. Bronner's

all-purpose spray cleaner

hand soap

dishwashing liquid

laundry detergent

We buy a few commercials products to round out our arsenal. We like Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day and Biokleen laundry detergents and Ecover Dishwasher Tablets. We also purchase OxiClean Free for the laundry and removing stains from various fabrics and Biokleen Bac-Out for treating organic stains, such as blood, and breaking through the mildew that builds up in the shower.

You can make your own laundry detergent and dishwashing liquid if you like. I think it's a good idea to ease yourself into this process, but if you're ready and willing (or especially eager to save money), check out the recipes section below for suggestions on how to make these items.

I started using these products because I have chronic migraines and I wanted to reduce all triggers I can control. I can't honestly say that moving away from traditional household cleaners has made a huge improvement in my migraines, but every little thing I can do to reduce my exposure to known triggers is well worth the effort. Although he sometimes grows annoyed with all these changes, even my husband agrees that they are worthwhile in helping me have a better quality of life. I hope they will do the same for you.

Recipes:
Cut to the Chase Cleaning
Green Bathroom Germ Cleaning Kit
Guide to Less Toxic Living
Homemade Dishwasher Detergent
Making Homemade Laundry Soap

Other sources:
How to Make a Nontoxic Cleaning Kit
Vinegar Tips - Guide to Cleaning with Vinegar

Technorati Tags: policy, ecology, environment, medication, health

Content by Diana E. Most of us already have way more "stuff" than we need or want. Why give in to the pressure to make the problem worse? If your values are leading you away from this way of living, there is no better time than right now to end the madness.

More and more people every year are celebrating Buy Nothing Day on the day after Thanksgiving, the most popular shopping day of the year. Some people get a rush out of getting up early in the morning, ads in hand, to get the best deals. I don't, and I consider not needing to shop for gifts a huge relief. You can read more about Buy Nothing Day at this website: Buy Nothing Day.

The very best thing would be to completely opt out of buying things to celebrate the holidays. Instead you could donate to a charity, offer your time and skills, put your crafting urges to use and make a gift or offer something special from your kitchen. But if that won't fly in your circle, consider these options for gifts that express your anti-consumer values. They'll leave you with a clearer conscience and encourage the recipients to adopt greener habits by taking better care of themselves and the planet.

Reusable shopping & produce bags

Travel mug for daily coffee junkies

Fair trade coffee

Fair trade chocolate

A bamboo plant

Organic skin care

A massage

Yoga classes

Natural rubber yoga mat

Organic cotton or bamboo clothing

Beeswax or soy candles

Organic cotton sheets

Portable solar charger for cell phone & mp3 player

If you're interested in learning about other ways to celebrate the holidays with less consumer focus this year, visit the Simplify the Holidays section of New American Dream's website: Simplify the Holidays.

Content by Diana E. Unfortunately, they failed to consider environmental safety in developing their recommendations and their advice directly contradicts that of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The Office of National Drug Control Policy's recommendations are intended to keep children and pets from accidentally ingesting unused medication. They suggest you crush pills and either mix them in with used kitty litter in the garbage or, for certain items, flush them down the toilet. Both are bad ideas.

Instead, you should contact the agency responsible for collection of hazardous waste in your city or county and ask them where to take your unused medications. Earth 911's website is a great resource for determining where to dispose of all kinds of waste products in your area: Earth 911.org. You can also visit your city or county's website and look for information about disposal of hazardous household waste.

Alternatively, you can often return unused medication to the pharmacy for safe disposal. Just make sure you ask enough questions to know whether the pharmacy will take care of the medication in a responsible fashion. You might as well throw the pills in the trash yourself if that is what they will do. You want to know they will do something to keep the pills out of the landfills and waterways.

Earth 911 recently featured a three-part series on its blog discussing safe, responsible disposal of medication. It's highly informative and well worth reading, especially if you're wondering why this issue is important. These articles provide more details. But in a nutshell, research has shown there is such an abundance of female hormones in our waterways that fish are being affected. The EPA has said that male fish in the U.S., Japan, the UK and Europe are becoming feminized. Creepy, right? Scientists speculate this is causing similar negative effects on human beings.

To Flush or Not to Flush

Don't Recycle Your Identity

A Pharmaceutical Gender Bender?

Sources:
- Federal Government Issues New Guidelines for Proper Disposal of Prescription Drugs
- Why are Pharmaceuticals Hazardous?
- Tips for Tossing Leftover Meds
- EPA: Assessment of Potential Ecological Effects
- Prescription Drug Disposal

Technorati Tags: policy, ecology, environment, medication, health

Content by Diana E.
